Most
people think that Goa is predominantly a Christian state. Unlike the
popular belief, Goa has a majority of Hindus and also has a Muslim
population. Goa has two very famous mosques where the Muslims come and
offer prayers. The Goan mosques have been built in the typical Muslim
architectural style complete with the domes, pillars, et al. There are
around 26 small mosques scattered in Goa that are used for community

Safa Masjid
The Safa Masjid (mosque) is one of the most popular mosques in Goa. It
is located in Ponda district of Goa and was built in 1560 by Adilshah of
Bijapur. All Muslims gather in this mosque during the festivals of
Id-ul-Zuha and Id-ul-Fitr. The mosque has a beautifully constructed tank
like pond adjacent to it. The pond used to be surrounded by a beautiful
garden which was destroyed by the Portuguese during their invasion.
Jama Masjid
Located at a distance of 25 kilometers from Margao, the Jama Masjid is
located at the Sanguem district in Goa. The Jama Masjid was re-built in
1959 as it had started to fall apart due to the lashes of time. The
beautiful is commendable for its simple yet elegant construction. The
entrance of the mosque is flanked by two beautiful and the mosque is
surrounded by elegant "Minars". The top of the minars have
dome shaped cabins.
